Ausaf A. Bari, MD, PhD, is Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where he holds the Ruth and Raymond H. Stotter Chair in Neurosurgery Excellence. He directs the Functional Neurosurgery Program and co-directs the Functional and Epilepsy Neurosurgery Fellowship, with joint appointments in Psychiatry, Radiation Oncology, and Bioengineering.
Dr. Bari earned his PhD in neuropsychopharmacology at Boston University, completed neurosurgical residency at UCLA, and trained in functional and restorative neurosurgery at the University of Toronto as a Van Wagenen Fellow. His clinical practice covers deep brain stimulation, MR-guided focused ultrasound, laser interstitial thermal therapy, responsive neurostimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, and functional radiosurgery.
His NIH-funded research program studies the neurobiology of pain, reward, and addiction using intraoperative recordings from DBS and stereo-EEG electrodes. He is principal investigator of the first-in-human trial of subgenual cingulate DBS for chronic low back pain (UH3NS113661) and collaborates with Caltech on intracortical brain-computer interfaces for motor restoration.
