This full-day pre-conference course will provide a comprehensive overview of the evolving neuromodulation ecosystem, organized around the central theme of serving the patient. Bringing together leaders from academia, industry, and investment, the program will explore the field from technological innovation through commercialization and clinical adoption. Sessions will examine the future of neuromodulation, the funding outlook for emerging startups, and advances in key areas including brain-computer interfaces, neuromodulation for internal organs, and emerging modalities such as ultrasound-based stimulation. Additional discussion will address the critical role of reimbursement and evidence generation in ensuring patient access to new therapies. The course will conclude with a panel featuring senior leaders from major neuromodulation companies sharing perspectives on industry trends and future opportunities. Designed to encourage cross-sector dialogue, the program aims to highlight how scientific, clinical, and business decisions ultimately converge around a common goal: improving outcomes and access for patients.

James Cavuoto is editor and publisher of Neurotech Business Report and the founder of Neurotech Reports. He is the lead author of "The Market for Neurotechnology," "The Market for Pain Neuromodulation," and "The Market for Bioelectronic Medicine," threemarket research reports published by Neurotech Reports. Cavuoto was the founder of Micro Publishing Press, a publishing company that helped pioneer the market for electronic publishing, digital imaging, and computer graphics. He earned a B.S. degree in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University, where he studied under pioneers in the field of functional electrical stimulation. He also pursued graduate studies in human factors engineering at University of Southern California. Cavuoto was an adjunct professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and the author of eight books on computer graphics, electronic publishing, and digital imaging. He is a member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. He has authored a chapter in the textbook Neuromodulation (Elsevier, 2009), as well as articles in Neuromodulation, Journal of Neural Engineering, Medical Device Daily, IEEE Spectrum, MX magazine, and the International Journal of Medical Marketing. He is coauthor, with Jennifer French, of Bionic Pioneers: Brave Neurotech Users Blaze the Trail to New Therapies (Neurotech Press, 2014).

Allen J. Burton, MD

Allen Burton is Divisional Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Neuromodulation at Abbott. In this capacity, he provides input on research and development, clinical study strategy, design, and execution, regulatory and health policy matters, and he acts as a liaison with physicians and payers. Dr. Burton joined Abbott in September of 2015 after 20 years in clinical practice. Prior to Abbott, he served as Chairman of the Department of Pain Medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2000-2011. From 2011 until August 2015, Dr. Burton practiced privately with Houston Pain Associates, where he directed clinical research and participated in many clinical trials.
Dr. Burton received his M.D. from the Baylor College of Medicine and a B.S from The University of Notre Dame. He trained in anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, serving as chief resident. He completed fellowship training at The University of Texas Medical Branch as a Carl Koller Scholar. Dr Burton has trained more than 25 fellows, and authored more than 100 manuscripts, in addition to coauthoring two textbooks. He holds multiple patents and co-founded a pharmaceutical company focused on pain and inflammation.

David L. Caraway, M.D., Ph.D.

Nevro Corp.David L. Caraway, M.D., Ph.D. assumed the Chief Medical Officer position at Nevro Corp. in Redwood City, CA. on April 1, 2014. Nevro, is a global, growth stage medical device company focused on developing innovative, evidence based solutions for the treatment of chronic medical conditions.
Dr. Caraway has diverse strategic responsibilities including providing direction and support of the design, development, and adoption of cutting-edge therapies that aim to advance the field of neuromodulation. He is on the CEO senior leadership team, Business development team, Grants and Education committee, and multiple roles in Clinical and Regulatory functions. He also represents Nevro’s mission and values in directing a medical affairs function with global responsibility for generating and providing medical and scientific information on Nevro’s products. -
D. Scott Kreiner, MD is Chief Medical Officer for Neuromodulation at Boston Scientific, where he provides clinical and strategic leadership across the neuromodulation portfolio, with a focus on evidence development, patient safety, and responsible adoption of new technologies for chronic pain and spine-related conditions.
Dr. Kreiner is a board-certified physician in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine and continues to practice as an Interventional Spine and Pain Management Physician at Barrow Brain and Spine. He previously served as Director of Interventional Spine & Sports Medicine and as Director of an Interventional Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship. He is the Pain Management physician for the Arizona Cardinals and also holds a faculty appointment as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine–Phoenix.
Dr. Kreiner completed his term as President of the North American Spine Society. He has held leadership roles in evidence-based spine care, clinical guideline development, patient safety, and health policy. His work has focused on the evaluation and responsible integration of emerging technologies in spine and pain care, including neuromodulation. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and clinical guidelines and is a frequent invited speaker at national and international meetings.
